GPS tracking is the system of monitoring the exact location of an object (e.g., car, person, animal, equipment, etc.) using Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites and GPS tracking devices. GPS tracking devices are fitted with a GPS receiver and a way to record or transmit its current location (i.e., latitude and longitude) at regular intervals.
This recorded location data can be relayed in near real time over a GSM or 4G cellular network or recorded to internal memory for later pick up and download. The latter is referred to as data logging, and can be used for asset tracking at remote locations like mining sites where cell phone reception can be intermittent.
GPS tracking software needs to be used to make sense of the recorded data, translating the logged location information into dots on a map.
GPS vehicle tracking
GPS vehicle tracking devices (different to GPS navigation systems) are installed into a vehicle’s engine control systems to provide additional telematics data for fleet tracking software. Data collected by vehicle GPS trackers can include fuel consumption, engine speed, hard braking and harsh acceleration or additional data from additional IoT sensors and mobile devices.
GPS fleet tracking
GPS tracking systems are an important part of fleet management software. Fleet vehicle tracking systems give fleet managers the GPS technology to see where their vehicles and work crews are at any given time, and functionality like geofence mapping and android and iOS apps to help monitor valuable equipment around the clock. GPS fleet tracking systems can help run a safer and more efficient fleet of commercial vehicles.
